Battery
Changing Directions
General Information:
You CAN change
your own batteries.
The programs/software is "burned' into a chip and therefore it is
literally impossible for you to lose your programs. Changing your batteries
may not solve the problem you're having with your calculator but it does
solve about 95 out of 100 of the problems we get phone calls about.
These directions are for changing
batteries in a COMPU-CAL Pro or SE handheld computer that is version 5.0
or higher (i.e. has a hard gray cover that slides off). If you have an
older model, please check your manual or call for battery changing directions.Batteries
should last for approximately 1 year (120 hours of solid use). Change
your batteries when you see random error messages, when the screen shows
"INIT. PUSH ENTER" when first turned on, or when the screen
starts to dim. However, before assuming your batteries are low:
1. Make sure that the
contrast control dial on the right side of the computer is rolled all the
way up.
2. Make sure that there are still TWO screws in the back cover and that
both are tight.
Be sure to put scotch tape over these screws so they
will not be lost if they become loose.
3. Check that the "ram card eject" button on the back is pushed
completely left toward the middle of the computer.
4. Remove the
back cover, gently tighten (they can "strip-out" very easily) all
the inside screws and make sure the batteries are locked into their little
cage.
5. If the computer
is NOT going to be used for a period of several months or more, remove the
batteries since they may leak and cause damage.
Directions:
WARNING:
When you change batteries, your enteral (and pediatric formula databases
if you have an SE) will revert to the products that were on it when you
bought it. All changes that you have made to the databases will be erased!
Always record ANY changes you make to these databases on the
blank worksheets in the back of your manual. See the directions in your
manual for changing formula databases. This is the only part of your software
which is affected by battery changing. ALL the programs themselves will
remain unchanged and ready for use when the new batteries are in place.
-
Purchase two
new lithium batteries (CR 2032) at a camera store, Radio Shack, or
office supply store (Staples, Office Max, Office Depot, etc). Lithium
batteries must be used. You will also need a small screwdriver that
fits the screws on the back of your computer.
-
Move the power switch to
the off position.
-
If you have a
COMPU-CAL acquired before the summer of 1995, your computer has a
large silver "Compu-Cal" label on the back of the computer
that must be removed. Peel it off, set it to one side, and then reapply
when you reach the end of step 6. Otherwise, on most computers, leave
the silver COMPU-CAL label in place.
-
Leaving the tape
covering the two screws on the back of the computer, push your screw
driver through the scotch tape and unscrew the screws. Then gently
remove the back cover. Press gently down on the plastic battery cover
plate latch (at the top of the plate) and move the battery cover plate
up toward the top edge of the computer to remove it.
-
Clean the new batteries
with a clean, dry cloth and substitute them for the old batteries.
Be sure the batteries are placed in the computer exactly the way the
old ones were positioned (i.e. that their + and - signs are correct).
If the battery compartment is on your left as you look down at it,
the top or farthest away battery should have words showing. The closer
one should have its plain side up.
-
Replace the battery
cover plate. Tighten all the visible inside screws of the computer.
Put the back cover on. Be sure you hook the top edge of the computer
back in place before lowering the edge nearest to you. Screw the back
cover on. Tip the computer up and look at the top edge to make certain
it is a consistent width all the way across indicating the back cover
is on correctly. If not, remove and reattach it. SCREWS ON THE BACK
MAY WORK LOOSE OVER TIME. WE SUGGEST YOU KEEP SMALL PIECES OF SCOTCH
TAPE OVER THEM AND TIGHTEN INSIDE AND BACK COVER SCREWS EVERY SIX
MONTHS. Check to make certain that the "ram card eject"
button is pushed completely to the left towards the center of the
computer. (If you have removed your older version of our label, replace
it now.)
-
Turn the computer
over and turn it on. A zero should appear on the screen OR it may
say "busy" in small letters. With it turned on, GENTLY,
poke a pen or straighten paper clip tip into the "all reset"
hole on the back of the computer and then turn the computer over.
Four asterisks will appear on the screen. Press [ENTER] and only one
asterisk will remain.
-
Turn the computer
off and on again. A zero will appear on the screen. Press the FA-key.
"INIT. PUSH ENTER" will appear on the screen. Press [ENTER].
The screen will flash messages about loading your TF data for about
one minute. If you have an SE model then "PF=..." will also
flash to indicate that the pediatric formulas are being loaded. Wait
until the screen shows "CPn.0x PUSHENTER"or "SEn.0x
PUSHENTER." Press [ENTER] again. "FA-PRGM#? E=LST"
will now appear on the screen.
-
The computer is ready to
work! Remember you must re-enter any tube feeding changes (and pediatric
formulas changes for the SE) you had made since getting your machine.
-
If you have a problem getting
your computer to work after changing batteries please give us a call.
If you cannot reach us within an hour, remove the batteries to prevent
them from draining their charge.
